Description
Description:
Axentri is a medication manufactured by Emcure Pharmaceuticals Ltd., containing the active ingredient Maraviroc. Each tablet typically contains 150 mg of Maraviroc. Maraviroc is an antiretroviral medication used for the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection in combination with other antiretroviral agents.
Indications:
Axentri is indicated for the treatment of HIV-1 infection in adult patients:
- Antiretroviral Naive Patients: Axentri can be used in antiretroviral treatment-naive patients in combination with other antiretroviral agents.
- Treatment-Experienced Patients: Axentri can also be used in treatment-experienced patients with CCR5-tropic HIV-1 infection who have evidence of viral replication and HIV-1 strains resistant to multiple antiretroviral agents.
How It Works:
Maraviroc, the active ingredient in Axentri, is a CCR5 antagonist that blocks the interaction between the CCR5 co-receptor on the surface of CD4+ T-cells and the HIV-1 virus. By inhibiting the binding of HIV-1 to the CCR5 co-receptor, Maraviroc prevents viral entry into the CD4+ T-cells, thereby inhibiting viral replication and reducing HIV-1 viral load.
Dosage and Administration:
The dosage of Axentri depends on the patient’s treatment history, viral tropism, and concomitant antiretroviral therapy. It is administered orally as directed by a healthcare professional. The recommended dosage regimen for antiretroviral-naive patients is usually one 150 mg tablet twice daily, taken with or without food. For treatment-experienced patients, the dosage may vary based on individual factors and treatment response.
Possible Side Effects:
Common side effects of Axentri may include:
- Upper Respiratory Tract Infections: Symptoms such as cough, sore throat, and nasal congestion may occur.
- Diarrhea: Gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea, nausea, and abdominal discomfort may occur.
- Dizziness: Some individuals may experience dizziness or lightheadedness.
- Fatigue: Feeling tired or weak is a common side effect reported by patients taking Maraviroc.
- Headache: Headache is a common side effect reported during treatment with Axentri.
- Rash: Skin rash or itching may occur, although severe allergic reactions are rare.
Warnings and Precautions:
- Hepatotoxicity: Patients should be monitored for signs of hepatotoxicity, including elevated liver enzymes and liver function tests.
- Hypersensitivity Reactions: Hypersensitivity reactions, including rash, fever, and systemic symptoms, have been reported with Maraviroc. Treatment should be discontinued if a severe hypersensitivity reaction occurs.
- Immune Reconstitution Syndrome: Immune reconstitution syndrome may occur, particularly in patients with advanced HIV infection.
- Cardiovascular Events: Patients with pre-existing cardiovascular disease or risk factors for cardiovascular events should be monitored closely during treatment.
