Description
Crysvita is a prescription medication used for the treatment of X-linked hypophosphatemia (XLH) in adults and children one year of age and older. XLH is a rare genetic disorder that affects the ability of the body to absorb phosphate, leading to softening of the bones, weak muscles, and other complications.
Uses:
Crysvita is primarily used to treat XLH, a rare genetic disorder that causes bone deformities and growth delays. Crysvita enhances the absorption of phosphate in the body to support the development and maintenance of bones, teeth, and muscles.
Storage Conditions:
Crysvita should be stored in the refrigerator between 2-8°C (36-46°F). Do not freeze or shake the solution. After removing from the refrigerator, let it come to room temperature before administering.
Mechanism of Action:
Crysvita works by blocking a protein known as fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23), which regulates the amount of phosphate in the body. By blocking FGF23, Crysvita increases the absorption of phosphate, leading to improved bone mineralization and reduced symptoms of XLH.
How to Use:
Crysvita is administered as a subcutaneous injection once every two weeks. It should be administered by a healthcare professional or by a patient who has been trained to administer subcutaneous injections. The recommended dose of Crysvita depends on the patient’s weight and age, as determined by a healthcare professional.
Precautions:
Before using Crysvita, inform your healthcare provider of any allergies or medical conditions you have. It is important to monitor phosphate levels and bone health during treatment with Crysvita. The safety and effectiveness of Crysvita in pregnant and breastfeeding women have not been established.
Drug Interactions:
Crysvita may interact with other medications, including phosphate binders, calcium supplements, and vitamin D supplements. Careful monitoring of phosphate levels is recommended when using Crysvita with these medications.
Contraindications:
Crysvita is contraindicated in individuals who have a hypersensitivity to Crysvita or to any of its components.
Overdose:
There have been reported instances of overdose of Crysvita, resulting in elevated phosphate levels. If you suspect an overdose of Crysvita, seek medical attention immediately.
Adverse Reactions:
Common adverse reactions with Crysvita include injection site reactions, such as pain, swelling, and redness. Other adverse reactions include headache, nausea, toothache, and tooth abscess. In rare cases, allergic reactions and anaphylaxis may occur. It is important to report any adverse reactions to your healthcare provider.
