Description
Description: Glivec, also known as Gleevec, is an oral medication available in tablet form, containing the active ingredient Imatinib. It belongs to a class of drugs called tyrosine kinase inhibitors and is used in the treatment of various types of cancers, including chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs), and certain types of systemic mastocytosis.
Mechanism of Action: Imatinib works by inhibiting the activity of specific tyrosine kinases, including BCR-ABL, c-KIT, and PDGF-R. These kinases are involved in signaling pathways that regulate cell growth, proliferation, and survival. By blocking these kinases, Imatinib interferes with the growth and survival of cancer cells, leading to their death.
Indications: Glivec/Gleevec is indicated for the treatment of:
- Newly diagnosed Philadelphia chromosome-positive (Ph+) chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) in chronic phase.
- Ph+ CML in blast crisis, accelerated phase, or chronic phase after failure of interferon-alpha therapy.
- Kit (CD117)-positive unresectable and/or metastatic malignant gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs).
- Adjuvant treatment of adult patients following complete gross resection of Kit (CD117)-positive GISTs.
Dosage and Administration: The dosage of Glivec/Gleevec may vary depending on the type of cancer being treated and the patient’s individual response to therapy. It is usually taken orally once daily with a meal and a large glass of water. The tablets should be swallowed whole and not crushed, broken, or chewed unless otherwise instructed by a healthcare professional.
Precautions and Warnings:
- Glivec/Gleevec should be used with caution in patients with a history of cardiac disease, liver dysfunction, or renal impairment.
- Patients should undergo regular monitoring of blood counts, liver function tests, and renal function tests during treatment with Glivec/Gleevec.
- Imatinib may interact with certain medications, so patients should inform their healthcare provider about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal supplements they are taking.
- Women of childbearing potential should use effective contraception during treatment with Glivec/Gleevec, as it may cause fetal harm if administered during pregnancy.
Adverse Reactions: Common adverse reactions associated with Glivec/Gleevec include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, edema, muscle cramps, fatigue, headache, rash, and musculoskeletal pain. Less common but more serious adverse reactions may include myelosuppression, hepatotoxicity, heart failure, and fluid retention.
Storage: Glivec/Gleevec should be stored at controlled room temperature away from moisture and heat. The tablets should be kept in their original packaging and stored out of reach of children. Unused or expired tablets should be disposed of properly according to local regulations.
