Description
Description:
Lopimune is a medication manufactured by Cipla Ltd., containing a combination of two antiretroviral drugs, Lopinavir and Ritonavir. Each tablet typically contains 200 mg of Lopinavir and 50 mg of Ritonavir. Lopimune is indicated for the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection in combination with other antiretroviral agents.
Indications:
Lopimune is indicated for the treatment of HIV-1 infection in adult and pediatric patients:
- Antiretroviral Therapy-Naive Patients: Lopimune can be used as part of initial antiretroviral therapy in treatment-naive patients.
- Treatment-Experienced Patients: Lopimune can also be used in treatment-experienced patients who require a change in their antiretroviral regimen.
How It Works:
Lopinavir and Ritonavir are protease inhibitors that work by blocking the activity of the HIV-1 protease enzyme, which is essential for the cleavage of viral polyproteins into functional proteins required for viral replication. By inhibiting the protease enzyme, Lopinavir and Ritonavir prevent the formation of mature viral particles, thereby reducing viral replication and lowering HIV-1 viral load.
Dosage and Administration:
The dosage of Lopimune depends on the patient’s treatment history, viral load, and concomitant antiretroviral therapy. It is administered orally as directed by a healthcare professional. The recommended dosage regimen for adults and pediatric patients weighing at least 40 kg is typically two tablets (each containing 200 mg of Lopinavir and 50 mg of Ritonavir) taken twice daily with food.
Possible Side Effects:
Common side effects of Lopimune may include:
- Nausea and Vomiting: Gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea may occur.
- Fatigue: Feeling tired or weak is a common side effect reported by patients taking Lopimune.
- Headache: Headache is a common side effect reported during treatment with Lopinavir and Ritonavir.
- Increased Lipid Levels: Lopinavir and Ritonavir can cause increases in blood lipid levels, including cholesterol and triglycerides.
- Insomnia: Some individuals may experience difficulty sleeping or insomnia during treatment.
- Liver Toxicity: Lopinavir and Ritonavir can cause liver toxicity, leading to elevated liver enzymes and liver function tests.
Warnings and Precautions:
- Hepatotoxicity: Patients should be monitored for signs of hepatotoxicity, including elevated liver enzymes and liver function tests.
- Pancreatitis: Pancreatitis has been reported with the use of protease inhibitors, including Lopinavir and Ritonavir.
- Cardiovascular Events: Patients with pre-existing cardiovascular disease or risk factors for cardiovascular events should be monitored closely during treatment.
- Drug Interactions: Lopinavir and Ritonavir can interact with other medications, including other antiretroviral agents and drugs metabolized by the cytochrome P450 system.
