Description
Veklury (remdesivir) is a medication used for the treatment of COVID-19, the illness caused by the coronavirus. It is an antiviral medication that works by blocking the virus’s ability to replicate itself, which may shorten the duration and severity of COVID-19 symptoms.
Uses:
Veklury is used to treat COVID-19 in adults and children aged 12 years and older who require hospitalization. It is used in patients with severe COVID-19 and in those who have frequent trips outside of the hospital for medical reasons.
Storage Conditions:
Veklury should be stored at room temperature, between 68°F and 77°F (20°C and 25°C). It should be protected from light and kept in its original packaging until ready to use.
Mechanism of Action:
Remdesivir, the active ingredient in Veklury, is an RNA polymerase inhibitor that blocks the replication of RNA viruses, such as SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. Once in the body, remdesivir is converted into an active form that interferes with the assembly of new virus particles, thereby reducing the amount of virus in the body.
How to Use:
Veklury is given as an injection or infusion into a vein (intravenous administration) by a healthcare provider in a hospital or healthcare facility. The dosage and duration of treatment will depend on the severity of COVID-19 symptoms and the patient’s medical history.
Precautions:
Before using Veklury, it is important to inform your healthcare provider of any allergies, medical conditions, and medications you are currently taking. Veklury may cause adverse reactions, such as liver damage, kidney injury, and allergic reactions. Patients with liver or kidney problems may require dosage adjustments or additional monitoring during treatment. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should discuss the risks and benefits of using Veklury with their healthcare provider.
Drug Interactions:
Veklury may interact with other medications, such as chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine, which are also used in the treatment of COVID-19. Other medications that may interact with Veklury include drugs that affect kidney function, such as diuretics or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
Contraindications:
Veklury is contraindicated in patients who are allergic to any ingredients in the medication. It should not be used in patients with severe liver or kidney problems or in those who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Overdose:
There is limited information on overdoses of Veklury, but symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, and stomach pain. If an overdose is suspected, medical attention should be sought immediately.
Adverse Reactions:
The most common adverse reactions reported with Veklury include nausea, vomiting, weakness, and rash. Other adverse reactions may include liver function abnormalities, increases in blood levels of creatinine, anemia, and respiratory failure. Patients should report any adverse reactions to their healthcare provider immediately.
